The Whitebarked Himalayan Birch (Betula jacquemontii) is a medium-sized, fast-growing tree with ornamental value all year round. Its dark green leaves throughout the spring and summer turn into a pleasant yellow in the fall and it has a pleasing upright, open-branching form. However, what really makes this tree special is its bark. A bright and breath-taking white, it has the whitest bark of any birch tree. Young trees start as having a rich brown bark but as the tree quickly matures it brightens up into this unique color. This tree is an exceptional sight in the winter time with its snow-white bark and very elegant form.
The Whitebarked Himalayan Birch is native throughout central Asia and the Himalayas. Originally this tree was a separate species from Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis) but is now considered a variety of it. It does very well in cool northern climates where there is snow covering the ground throughout the winter time. This tree is a great option as a yard or garden tree with its magnificent appearance and stature. It can grow in partial or full sun and does well in moist, well drained soils. It cannot tolerate hot and dry climates.
