The White Shield Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera ‘White Shield’) is a medium-sized, fast-growing shade tree. It is a tough tree with cinnamon colored branches with heart-shaped leaves that are a glossy dark green that keep their color throughout the summer. Its crown is rounded with its main branches forming a vase-shaped canopy. In the fall, the leaves turn a stunning golden-yellow. This tree is applauded for its thornless and fruitless attributes, making it a much more manageable addition to the landscape.
The White Shield Osage Orange is native to the United States midwest and southern great plains. This cultivar was discovered by Steve Bieberich in western Oklahoma. It is a great choice for hotter climates as a shade tree in a yard, a street tree, or a shade tree in a park. Its ability to be thornless and fruitless makes it more family friendly since there is no threat of getting pricked by thorns and there is no messy fruit litter that requires cleanup. It is extremely drought and heat tolerant. Does best in full sun and is adaptable to most soils.
