The Wavy Leaf Oak (Quercus undulata) is a small-sized, tough, semi-evergreen oak tree. It has a shrub-like form with a very short main trunk and upright main branches with somewhat irregular smaller branches. Its foliage is dark blue-green with a more dull green and hairy underside with shallow lobes that could also be considered wavy edges. Depending on the year the tree will keep its leaves on through the winter. This tree produces small acorns that are one-third covered by its scaly cup.  \n \nThe Wavy Leaf Oak is native to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and northern Mexico. It can be found growing in the wild on rocky slopes and mesas. This tree is a hybrid that occurred naturally in the wild along with many other shrub oak hybrids but this is most likely a cross between the Gambel Oak and Turbinella Oak. \n \nIt makes a nice landscaping tree because it is pest free and can form a dense privacy border in groups or can be nice when planted near patios or decks. Its leaves when completely dried out can also serve as an excellent mulch in the garden to keep slugs, grubs and other pests away. It does best in full to partial sun and is tolerant of most soil types and also drought tolerant.
