The Turkish Filbert (Corylus Colurna) is a medium- to large-sized tree. It has quite the magnificent form, stretching up tall in a pyramidal shape with a thick central leader. It is made up of branches that have a dense growing habit and shoot out off the trunk horizontally and parallel to the ground. Its foliage is dark green and textured and is one of the last leaves to drop in the fall before turning a subtle pale yellow. In early spring, one of the first things to bloom are this tree’s drooping catkins that appear in clusters and are subtle but attractive.
The Turkish Filbert is native to southeast Europe and western Asia. It is a type of hazelnut, producing nuts in large beaked husks that are attractive to wildlife and edible to humans as well. This tree is a good choice for urban settings such as streets, parking lots, or city parks due to its resistance to pests, disease, and pollution. It also is good for yards standing on its own with its formal appearance and exceptional shade. Once established, it is an extremely tolerant tree through hot summers, cold winters, drought, and wind. Does best in full to partial sun and can grow in most soil types.
