The Toba Hawthorn (Crataegus x mordenensis ‘Toba’) is a small-sized, hardy, ornamental flowering tree. It has a rounded, vase-shaped form with an intriguing twisting trunk when fully mature. In the spring, large double white flowers emerge with a pink hue and become more and more pink as the season progresses. It has glossy green foliage and small red fruits that appear in the fall. The rough gray also adds superior ornamental value in the winter landscape.
The Toba Hawthorn was introduced by the Morden Research Station in Manitoba, Canada. It is the hardiest of the ornamental hawthorn cultivars. Its stunning spring display develops into an average summer appearance which makes it blend into the landscape but can be balanced by a couple other trees with differentiating textures. Although this tree does have thorns, it is low maintenance and does not need a lot of pruning. It does best in full to partial sun and is tolerant of most soil types.
