The Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) is a large-sized shade tree. It has a pyramidal shape as a young tree and grows to develop an open, broad, rounded canopy with a short trunk that can provide excellent relief to the hot summer sun. Its foliage is 3” to 7” long and glossy, dark green with 5-10 lobes and has beautiful fall color of yellows and reddish-purples. Its trunk is made up of light gray-brown, scaly, and fissured with flat ridges when mature to provide nice winter interest.

The Swamp White Oak is native to eastern North America, its range from Quebec down to Pennsylvania, over to Wisconsin and south to Georgia and Arkansas. It is found growing in the wild in bottomlands and lowlands near swamps, lakes, streams, in valleys, floodplains. It also does surprisingly well in compact soils and drought conditions in urban and suburban environments. It is a great option as a shade tree or lawn tree in wet spots in the yard. Can also be a suitable tree for large parks. It does best in full sun and moist and acidic soils.
