The Spring Snow Fruitless Flowering Crabapple- sproutfree™ (Malus ‘Spring Snow’ sproutfree™) is a small- to medium-sized ornamental flowering tree. Its bloom is unique to the cultivar, starting as light pink buds then opening up as fragrant, pure white flowers in mid spring. It has a nice form of upright branches with dense foliage and a broad, rounded canopy. Its foliage is shiny and bright green in the spring and summer then transforms to a gorgeous golden-yellow in the fall. It also is quite vigorous and has a fast growth rate.
The Spring Snow Fruitless Flowering Crabapple- sproutfree™ originated at Parkside, Saskatchewan, Canada and found by A.J. Porter. It was introduced in 1967 by the Inter-State Nurseries of Hamburg, Iowa. This cultivar is unique in its fruitless abilities combined with its profuse white flower bloom and rapid growth rate.
Its fruitless attribute allows it to serve very well as a city tree because there is no messy fruit litter. Its white bloom is also very captivating and lightens up the urban spring landscape. Will do well in a yard or garden as well. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils and should not be left to dry out in the hot summer months when first planted. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
