The Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii) is a large-sized shade tree. It has a pyramidal crown when young before developing a rounded, open, somewhat narrow and upright canopy in maturity. Its foliage is a striking dark green for most of the year before turning vivid shades of red to red-orange in late fall and remain on the tree later than most other fall foliage. Its leaves are 6-8” long and have 7-9 lobes that bristle on the tips. A relatively fast grower. The tree also can be of interest in the winter with its attractive branching pattern.

The Shumard Oak is native to the central and eastern United States, from North Carolina down to northern Florida and over to central Texas and eastern Kansas. It can be found in drier, elevated sites growing in the wild but is also found in bottomlands and close to streams, lakes, valleys, and at the edge of swamps. It is a very adaptable tree that can be planted and grown in moist or dry locations. A great option as a street tree due to tolerance of urban pollution and also as a specimen yard tree or shade tree for its large form and attractive fall color. Does best in full sun and is highly adaptable and tolerant of most soil types.
