The Shawnee Brave™ Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum ‘Mickelson’) is a large-sized deciduous conifer tree. It is known for its narrower shape and central leader which makes up a pristine pyramidal form that stands out in any landscape. Its foliage has also been known to catch the eyes of suburban homeowners and city walkers alike with its dense, feathery green deciduous needles that turn a sufficient bronze-orange in the fall. The peeling bark that reveals a copper-brown inner bark helps to maintain its attractive appearance in the winter.
The Shawnee Brave™ Bald Cypress was introduced by Earl Cully of Heritage® Trees, Inc. in Jacksonville, Illinois. This cultivar differs from the parent species with its narrower form and denser foliage. It is a great option as an accent tree in tighter spaces, like in yards close to houses/structure or a more tightly planted street tree and urban privacy barrier. It is an extremely adaptable tree and can grow in areas with pollution and in soils with a high salt content and poor drainage. It does best in full sun and will grow in most soil conditions.
