The Shadblow Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) is small- to medium-sized tree that has ornamental value in all four seasons. Starting in mid-spring, small, white, star-shaped flowers cover the dense, upright branches before the leaves emerge, giving off a subtle but pleasant fragrance. Following the emergence of the green oval-shaped leaves, small and edible purple berries appear in early summer which taste subtly sweet to both humans and birds. In the fall, the foliage turns into a pleasant red-orange. This tree also has ornamental interest in the winter, with its graceful form, smooth light-gray bark, and darker gray striations down its trunk.

The Shadblow Serviceberry is native to eastern North America. It is also referred to as Shadbush because its flowering occurs simultaneously with the yearly shad migration in New England river systems. Its berries can also be used in jams and pies. It is found in the wild in wet and swampy environments, though it can grow in both wet and dry conditions. It is a great option as a yard tree near a pond, stream, or standing alone. It does best in full or partial sun and can withstand a variety of soil types.
