The Satomi Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’) is a small-sized ornamental flowering tree. It has a pleasing form with spreading branches that are horizontal to upright and shape a rounded-pyramidal canopy. Pink to purple flowers (color varies with climate) burst from the branches in June. The flowers have 4 pointed petals which surround tiny yellow-green flowers in the center. Following the flowers are rose-pink fruits that almost resemble strawberries and are very appetizing to birds. In the fall, its dark green foliage turns to a scarlet before dropping and revealing exfoliating, spotty, light gray bark which provides winter interest.
The Satomi Kousa Dogwood is a cultivar native to Korea and Japan. This cultivar is unique in its bright display of flowers. Its ornamental value in all 4 seasons makes it a great specimen that demands attention in any landscape. Plant near patios or in gardens for a small-sized, captivating piece. It does best in full sun to part shade and tolerates most soils with regular watering.
