The Sargent Tina Flowering Crabapple sproutfree™ (Malus sargentii ‘Tina’ sproutfree™) is a very small-sized flowering ornamental tree. It has a gorgeous bloom of flowers in mid spring, emerging as pink buds then opening up as clusters of dazzling white blossoms that give off a subtle but pleasant fragrance. Its form is densely branched and spreading. The dark green leaves give the tree a handsome look in the summer before turning to golden-yellow in the fall. The fall foliage is joined by very small red fruits which stay on into the winter and attract species of birds. It is a solid winter specimen with its bare, spreading branches dotted by the small red fruits.
The Sargent Tina Flowering Crabapple sproutfree™ was discovered by William McReynolds of Hooks Nursery near Chicago. Sometime before 1972, he sowed Sargent (Malus sargentii) seeds and discovered this little dwarf cultivar and named it after his granddaughter. This is a great tree for a showy shrub border for its dense form or near patios where people can admire its beauty throughout the seasons. It can also do well in any garden, urban or rural, that needs a little brightening up. It does best in full sun and prefers well-drained soils.
