The Ruby Falls Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis ‘Ruby Falls’) is a small-sized flowering ornamental tree. With its cascading form made up of weeping branches, this very small tree is a great specimen in the garden. In early spring, it has the classic Redbud bloom with dark-rose flowers covering the leafless branches for several weeks. Following the flower bloom is the emergence of the burgundy foliage that matures to a deeper purple and eventually to a greener color. The small heart-shaped leaves then turn yellow in the fall.
The Ruby Falls Eastern Redbud is a North Carolina State University introduction. It stands apart from its parents species with its very small size, weeping form, and purple leaves. This tree is a great choice as a specimen tree in pretty much any landscape. It will most likely look best standing on its own due to its unique form and foliage color that captures your attention. When planting, make sure to put it in its final location because it does not transplant well. It also tolerates urban pollution well. Does best in full to partial sun and does not have a soil preference.
