The Regal Prince® Oak (Quercus x warei ‘Long’) is a large-sized columnar tree. It has a narrow, oval form with an upright branching habit and short central leader. Its foliage is glossy, leathery, and varies from bright to dark green with a lighter green undersite and 6-8 blunted lobes. In the fall, they turn yellow-brown. The acorns attract wildlife and are small with about one-half of the nut covered by the cup. It has a strong tolerance to mildew.
The Regal Prince® Oak is an English Oak and Swamp White Oak hybrid. It was introduced by Earl Cully who’s property still has the original tree from which this cultivar was selected. When it was introduced it was an impressive improvement to other columnar oaks and this cultivar’s seedlings have been used to make additional impressive columnar cultivars. This tree is a great option as a street tree or in narrow spaces in lawns and yards. It can be planted in groups as a screen. Does best in full sun and grows in most soil conditions.
