The Redmond Linden (Tilia americana ‘Redmond’) is a large-sized shade tree. It has a pleasing symmetrical form made up of a pyramidal-oval shape with elegant upright branches and a strong central leader. The large dark green leaves are heart-shaped and maintain their bold color throughout the heat of summer before turning a paler green or yellow in the fall. In early summer, small clusters of fragrant yellow flowers emerge and attract a variety of pollinators.
The Redmond Linden was introduced to the nursery trade in 1927 by Plumtree Nursery of Freemont, Nebraska. It also can be identified under the name, Tilia x euchlora. This cultivar is one of the most popular varieties of American Linden for its denser canopy, slightly smaller leaves, and more upright and less droopy branching habit. It is a great option as a shade tree that also has a significant amount of ornamental value. Does best in full or partial sun and prefers moist, well-draining soils but is quite tolerable and should grow well in the average home landscape.
