The Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) is a medium- to large-sized ornamental flowering tree. It has an irregular, oval form with a somewhat dense branching pattern. The leaves are large and ovate, growing up to a foot long and turning yellow over autumn before darkening and falling off for the winter. This tree’s primary ornamental value is its trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom at the beginning of the growing season. In late spring to early summer, beautiful white flowers with yellow centers and purple patterns on the inside emerge to accompany the dense green foliage.

The Northern Catalpa’s native range starts in western New England and stretches west to North Dakota and south to New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. It is a great choice for a number of landscapes due to its ornamental value, attractive canopy, fast-growth, and ability to grow in a number of conditions. Popular tree for busy parks or big yards. The trunk also provides some interest with its gray color and flaky and brittle wood. Does best in full to partial sun and can withstand most growing conditions but prefers moist, well drained soils.
