The Narrowleaf Cottonwood (Populus angustifolia) is a large-sized, native columnar tree. It has a strong central leader with thin upright branches that form a narrow canopy. Often the tree is covered in leaves all the way down to the bottom because of small, low limbs. The foliage is small and yellow-green to dark green and are very similar to willow leaves (they are in the same family). In the fall, the leaves turn a shining yellow to brighten up the landscape. The bark is yellow-gray to grayish brown and smooth on the upper parts of the trunk and more furrowed on the lower parts.
The Narrowleaf Cottonwood is native to southern British Columbia over to Alberta and Saskatchewan and south to southern California, Texas, and northern parts of Mexico. Commonly found in the Rocky Mountains and near rivers and streams, it was discovered in 1805 by Lewis and Clarke. This tree is a great choice for a large border and can grow nicely in groups very close to each other. Also does well in a natural setting and blends nicely into the forest but pops in the fall with its bright yellow leaves. Does best in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soils.
