The Krauter Vesuvius Purple Leaf Plum (Prunus cerasifera ‘Krauter Vesuvius’) is a small- to medium-sized flowering tree with multiple seasons of ornamental interest. In mid spring before the leaves emerge, deep pink buds appear and open up into single bowl-shaped flowers that are light pink and thoroughly cover the bare branches. \n \nFollowing the bloom is the arrival of the deep red foliage of serrated, rounded leaves with pointed tips that mature into a reddish-purple over the summer and hold its color into the fall. The leaves usually come on while the flowers are still open, creating a splendid contrast between the deep red and light purple. In the fall, small bright red plums appear on the branches to light up the landscape among colorful fall foliage (however does not produce a large amount of fruit).  \n \nThe Krauter Vesuvius Purple Leaf Plum was selected as a sport from the old Vesuvius Flowering Plum variety by Howard Krauter of Krauter Nursery, California in summer 1957. It was selected for its ability to hold its beautiful purple color late into the summer. This tree is quite adaptable, being cold hardy, drought tolerant, and able to withstand urban pollution. It is a great option as a tree for large urban areas. It will also do well as a specimen in the yard or garden. Does best in full to partial sun (foliage and flower color will be best in full sun) and can adapt to a variety of soils but should be watered regularly until established.
