The Kankakee Newport Flowering Plum (Prunus cerasifera ‘Kankakee Newport’) is a small- to medium-sized flowering tree. It has a very upright growth habit and canopy that gets slightly more rounded as it matures. The foliage is quite stunning, emerging as reddish-purple with hues of green in the summertime. In the spring before the leaves emerge, light pink flowers bloom and cover the tree to create a remarkable spring display. In the fall, round purple fruits appear on the tree. These fruits are edible to both birds and humans but a single tree does not produce a great amount of fruit so they are used more for ornamental value and wildlife attraction. \n \nNewport plum trees were first introduced into the United States in 1923 by the University of Minnesota and are believed to be native to the Middle East. The Kankakee Newport Flowering Plum cultivar is very similar to the ‘Thundercloud’ cultivar, however, this variety is more cold hardy and its leaves are slightly less purple. It is a great specimen tree standing on its own with multiple seasons of ornamental interest and a nice form. Does best in full sun and likes well-drained soil.
