The Irish Yew (Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata’) is a small- to medium-sized evergreen tree and one of the most popular conifers in the world. It has a very narrow, columnar habit as a young tree before filling out into a more conical shape as it matures. The branches have an upright habit with long, dark green needles that boast a handsome appearance. In late spring-early summer, small, crimson red cones unique to Yew trees cover the canopy and contrast beautifully with the green foliage.

The Irish Yew was discovered in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland by a farmer in 1780. This cultivar differs from the English Yew in its narrower form and longer, more densely distributed needles. It makes a fantastic privacy screen or hedge when planted in rows and but could also make a stately year-round specimen tree with its symmetrical form and red fruit. It also is a great choice for planting near a structure or a house due to its narrow form and high shade tolerance. It does best in full sun to full shade and can tolerate a variety of soil types.
