The Hedge Maple (Acer campestre) is a small- to medium-sized, slow-growing ornamental tree with dense summer shade provided by its luscious, dark green foliage. Able to grow in partial sun, the Hedge Maple is adaptable to most soils and is salt-tolerant. This tree is a good street, patio, or lawn tree. It is good for planting around obstructions such as utility lines and fences due to its durable pruning ability. Also good for hedgerows when properly sheared. The leaves have 3-5 lobes and turn yellow in autumn. The twigs are often corky while the bark can be ridged and furrowed, adding to the interest of the tree. This maple is a good option for bonsai.
