The Hazel Smith Blue Giant Sequoia (Sequoiradendron giganteum ‘Hazel Smith’) is a medium- to large-sized conifer evergreen ornamental tree. It has a more open crown as a young tree but matures to have a tighter form and a pyramidal shape with ascending branches. Its foliage is beautiful, aromatic blue-gray needles that are scale-like and keep their color through the winter. The bark is extremely attractive as well, red-brown and spongy. This tree has a very fast growth rate, most trees being 30’ in height after ten years and up to 60’ tall in very mature trees.
The Hazel Smith Blue Giant Sequoia was selected by Don and Hazel Smith of Watnong Nursery in New Jersey. It was selected for its improved cold hardiness, blue foliage color, and fast growth rate. This tree is a great option to accompany large gardens or as a specimen tree in the yard. Its large size and color are quite striking and make a vibrant addition to the winter landscape. It does best full sun and prefers moist, well-draining soils.
