The Hardy Rubber Tree (Eucommia ulmoides) is a medium- to large-sized shade tree. It is known for its exceptional tolerance to drought. This tree has an upright and dense branching habit and a symmetrical, ovate to rounded crown that is low-branching. The tough foliage is dark green and very glossy, keeping its color very nicely even in extreme heat. When lit from above or even in bright moonlight, the leaves are quite striking and appear to glimmer.
The Hardy Rubber Tree is native to central China. The bark can be used to treat other plants with diseases or disorders. This tree is a great choice as a shade tree and can also be used as a specimen for its appealing form and reliable, dark green summer color. It also is extremely resistant to pests and diseases. It does best in full sun and prefers moist soils but once established tolerates most soil conditions.
