The Halka™ Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Christie’) is a medium-sized, fast-growing shade tree. It has a very broad crown, one of the widest of the Honeylocust cultivars, and an open, upright branching habit. Its foliage is late to emerge but has a nice color, vivid green in the summer and turns a bright gold in the fall. It has smaller foliage than most other cultivars, making leaf clean up in the fall a little less taxing. It is also thornless which makes it more family-friendly when it comes to pruning and interacting with the tree. \n \nThe Halka™ Honeylocust was introduced by Halka Nursery in New Jersey. This cultivar is especially attributed for its thornless attribute, small foliage, fast growth rate, and wide spreading crown.
This is a great option as a shade tree. It will do very well in a yard and is ornamental enough to stand on its own as a specimen. It can be used as a captivating street tree as well but should not be planted in super dense city environments due to its low tolerance to air pollution. It is, however, very adaptable to many different growing conditions. It does best in full sun and does not have a preference to soil type but its fall color is best in moist, well-drained soils.
