The Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a medium- to large-sized shade tree. It is also sometimes referred to as Common Hackberry, Northern Hackberry, or American Hackberry. A fast-growing tree, it sports a straight central leader and a broad vase-shaped crown made up of arching branches and forest green serrated leaves that are oval shaped with pointed tips. It can provide some winter interest with its light gray, rough and corky bark and small purple fruit that comes on in the fall and lasts on the tree until the winter, summoning species of birds to liven up the scenery.
The Hackberry is native to North America up from Quebec to Manitoba down to North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma, though it varies in size depending on the climate. This tree is most known for its toughness to a range of climates. It is a great choice as a tree for a park or big yard as a shade tree. Looks attractive standing on its own with its upright, vase form. It does well in full to partial sun and can tolerate most growing conditions.
