The Golden Shadows® Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia 'Wstackman' USPP 11,287) is a small-sized highly ornamental flowering tree. It is known for its tasteful variegated leaves that are orange when they first come on and develop into an uplifting yellow and jewel-green. Along with this unique feature of the tree are the distinctive Pagoda attributes as well. Small flat clusters of white fragrant flowers emerge in the spring, adding elegant charm to the foliage. Its form is also quite elegant in appearance, spreading branches growing from the trunk at a 90 degree angle parallel to the ground which resemble the pagodas of Japan and give the tree distinctive layers.
The Golden Shadows® Pagoda Dogwood was discovered by Walt Stackman, a daylily breeder of Illinois, as a branch sport of a Pagoda Dogwood tree in West Chicago. This culvar is unique for its variegated leaves and smaller size. It is also slightly more heat tolerant than its parent species. This is a great choice for small yards and gardens as a specimen standing alone. It adds significant ornamental value to any landscape without being overpowering due to its small size. It does best in full to partial sun and can tolerate most soil types but should not be left to dry out.
