The Fruitless Mulberry (Morus alba ‘Kingan’) is a medium-sized, fast-growing shade tree. It has a dense, rounded crown with slender branches that grow close together. In the spring, its handsome foliage comes on as large, glossy dark green leaves with a leathery texture and turns a gentle yellow in the fall. This tree is an entirely male cultivar, meaning it does not produce fruit making it easier to deal with since there is no need for cleanup beneath the canopy in the fall.
The Fruitless Mulberry was introduced by the Porter-Walton nursery in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1932. This cultivar is known for its fruitless attribute and toughness. It is tolerant of heat, drought, and alkalinity as well as being adaptable to most soil types. It has become a popular street tree in southwestern states and is also a good fit as a shade tree in parks. It does not require frequent pruning but does maintain a somewhat unkempt appearance naturally so more frequent pruning might be necessary for aesthetic purposes. It is also a good easy shade tree for a yard as long as it has room to spread. Does great in tough conditions. Prefers full to partial sun.
