The Fort McNair Red Horsechestnut (Aesculus x carnea ‘Fort McNair’) is a medium-sized ornamental tree that is an impressive sight to behold during spring time in any landscape.. It has a rounded, dense crown that can provide adequate shade. In the spring, its red-pink flowers bloom and are an impressive sight to behold contrasting against its gloomy green leaves. It also can hold its own in an autumn landscape with its dark green foliage transforming into a golden yellow in the fall.  \n \nThe FortMcNair Red Horsechestnut is a cultivar of a European Horsechestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) hybrid. It was selected and introduced in Fort McNair, Washington D.C.. It is unique from its parent species in that it is slightly smaller and rounder. This tree is a great choice for a yard or near a garden due to manageable size, appealing form, and colorful flowers. It does well in full sun and is tolerant of a variety of soil types.
