The Forest Pansy Redbud (Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’) is a small- to medium-sized ornamental and flowering tree. It has a sparse branching habit with a broad canopy and is known as an ornamental specimen for a couple of its features. First are the pink rose-pink flowers unique to the Redbud species that bloom in early spring as a farewell to the winter season. Distinctive of the cultivar are the elegant purple heart-shaped leaves that emerge as scarlet purple after the flowers bloom and mature to maroon for the summer. In the fall the foliage varies a bit from season to season but will range from red to orange with green mixed in.

The Forest Pansy Redbud cultivar started as a seedling in McMinnville, Tennessee at Forest Nursery. This cultivar is coveted for its maroon leaves unlike the parent Eastern Redbud tree. It is a great addition to any yard or garden with its bright colors and pleasing form. Needs to be planted in its permanent location due to not tolerating transplanting well. Does not have a preference to soil type but should be watered regularly until established. Prefers full or partial sun though in hot climates some shade goes a long way.
