The European Larch (Larix decidua) is a large-sized deciduous conifer tree. As a young tree it has a conical, upright form then gets broader as it ages. \n \nThe branches on mature trees tend to droop in an elegant way. This tree has needle-like foliage and produces cones in the fall like a lot of evergreen trees but it actually sheds its needles in late fall, making it deciduous. The vivid green needles come on early in the fall and often turn blue-green in the summer before consistently turning golden-yellow in the fall for a fantastic autumn display. The cones first emerge as red then mature to brown and stay on the tree into the winter. Mature trees also form interesting bark, reddish-brown, scaly, and furrowed.
The European Larch (Larix decidua) is native to northern and central Europe. They are found growing in the wild in high altitudes and forming extensive mountain forests. This tree needs a lot of space to grow its roots and spread its branches making it a great ornamental tree for large properties and yards. Its large, spreading, semi-drooping form and magnificent yellow fall appearance makes it an attractive tree to look at planted on its own. It does best in full sun and can withstand most soil conditions except urban pollution.
