The Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small- to medium-sized ornamental tree in the legume family. It is also referred to as the Judas Tree. It often grows as an understory tree and has a flat to rounded spreading crown that is quite graceful. This tree is known for its flowers that come on in early spring. Around April, rose-pink/purple flowers emerge on the tree, creating a splendidly colorful display of bright colors after the bleak winter months. Following the flowers are the heart-shaped leaves that come on with a reddish hue before turning dark green for the summer and then yellow in autumn.

The Eastern Redbud is native to eastern North America, its range stretching from New Jersey down to Florida and over to Missouri and Northern Mexico. This tree is one of the first to bloom in the spring. It also has great wildlife value as a larval host plant and the bean pods it produces attract songbirds. It is a great choice for standing alone in the garden as a specimen or as an understory tree in the landscape. It does not do well in heat or drought and cannot withstand super moist soils. It also does not tolerate root disturbance very well, so plant it in its permanent location and keep it watered until it is established. It does well in partial to full sun.
