The Dwarf Korean Lilac on standard (Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’) is a very small flowering ornamental tree. It has a rounded canopy that is small and bulbous and sits atop a narrow central leader as a young tree. As it matures, the branches start to spread and the canopy becomes more broad while maintaining its rounded form. In mid to late spring, red buds open up to sweetly fragrant, upright, light purple to lilac-purple flowers emerge in clusters to create a stunning contrast of bright flowers against the dark green leaves. These leaves are small and broadly ovate, keeping their color well throughout the summer.

The Dwarf Korean Lilac was discovered growing in a garden near Beijing, China in 1909 by Frank Meyer. It does not grow naturally in the wild. This cultivar was selected for its excellent resistance to mildew, compact structure, and profuse bloom. This tree is great as a specimen in the garden for its beautiful flowers and attractive form. It can also be planted in groups to form a showy shrub or hedge border. It does best in full sun and is tolerant of many soil types.
