The Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is a small- to medium-sized showy flowering ornamental tree. It is known for its excellent long-lasting bloom of flowers throughout the summer. It has a wide-spreading, upright form and is very popular amongst southern gardeners. In June, papery-textured pink and red flowers with crinkled petals start to bloom on the tree and continue to bloom until the fall. The dark green foliage also creates a stark contrast between the leaves and flowers and makes the pinks and reds pop even more. The thin bark is gray and exfoliating, revealing smooth underbark that varies from brown to gray.

The Crape Myrtle is native to the Himalayas through southern China, southeast Asia, and Japan. It has naturalized in the United States from Virginia over to Arkansas and down to Texas and Florida. The flowering is at its best when it is in full sun and the seed pods are trimmed off. This tree is a great option as a specimen plant on its own or planted in groups to form huge blooms during the summer. They can also be used to form a showy hedge or screen.  \n \nIt does not do well in below 0°F temperatures. Prefers full sun and can grow in a wide range of soils but does not like overly moist conditions and roots should be watered somewhat regularly during the summer in very hot climates (while keeping its foliage dry).
