The Columnar English Oak (Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’) is a large-sized columnar tree. It has very narrow and upright branches when young and develops a broader, more pyramidal shape with a very short trunk in maturity while maintaining its columnar form. Its dark green foliage has 3-7 rounded lobes with a more blue-green color beneath. The bark is dark gray with ridges and furrows.
The Columnar English Oak has been widely planted in the United States since the seventeenth century. It is more popular in cultivation than the parent species (Quercus robur) due to its narrow form. It is a great option as a street tree along boulevards because its canopy does not need much room to spread and it is tolerant of urban pollution. It can also be good for tight spaces in yards or used as a hedge. Along with urban conditions, it is also tolerant of salt and drought. It should be planted in full sun due to its susceptibility to mildew and can grow in a wide range of soils.
