Cimmaron Ash

The Cimmaron Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Cimmzam’) is a medium- to large-sized fasting-growing shade tree. It has a narrow form when young, but opens up as it matures into a uniform, upright, rounded canopy. Its dark green foliage comes on later in the spring but makes up for its late start with longer lasting fall foliage. The wait in the spring is well worth it, this tree sports phenomenal fall colors of rich, fiery reds and burgundies that you’ll want to lighten up your landscape for as long as possible. It also has interesting bark that is nice in a winter landscape, gray and becoming deeply furrowed with age.

The Cimmaron Ash’s name indicates that it is a selection of Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) but it is unsettled in the industry if it is actually a selection of Green Ash or White Ash (Fraxinus americana). This cultivar was discovered as a seedling in 1968 at Sustar Farm in Perry, Ohio. It was found growing among other Green Ash trees but has more attributes of the White Ash, hence its debatable lineage.  \n \nIt sets itself apart from other cultivars with its long-lasting fall foliage. This tree is a great choice as a large shade tree due to its broader, rounded form and upright stature. Given enough space, it can also do well as a street tree. Its attractive fall color and winter silhouette gives it good secondary value as a specimen. Does best in full sun and does not have a preference to soil type.
