The Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana) is a medium-sized native shade tree. It has an erect form with upright, spreading branches and rounded canopy. Its leaves are oval and deeply ridged with dark green on the topside and lighter green on the underside. In the fall, depending on sun exposure, the leaves turn yellow to orange-red. This tree summons lots of wildlife, its inconspicuous flowers attracting butterflies while its fruits are loved by species of birds. Its bark is gray and deeply ridged.

The Cascara is native from British Columbia down to California mostly on the western side of the Cascade Mountains. It is a great option as a smaller shade tree in the yard. It is also nice to observe in the spring, summer, and fall for its nice form and wildlife that it attracts. Can also be planted near streams or rivers for erosion control and bank stabilization. It does best in partial sun but can grow in full sun and likes moist, well-drained soils.
