The Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is a large-sized shade tree. It has a broad spreading, rounded and open crown atop a very large trunk and thick, horizontal branches. The canopy is made up of big, leathery, dark green leaves that have 5-9 rounded lobes and turn a mild yellow-brown in the fall. This tree produces big acorns that are a rich brown and have a fringed cup that covers half of the nut. The gray-brown, deeply furrowed and ridged bark combined with the immense trunk and great horizontal branches makes this tree quite captivating even after it drops its leaves in the winter months.
The Bur Oak is native to central and eastern North America from Nova Scotia down to Pennsylvania and west to Manitoba and Texas. It can be found in the wild growing in bottomland soils, low woods, and stream valleys along with upland environments. This tree is perfect as a specimen plant for its incredibly elegant form that only gets better with age and wide canopy that provides excellent shade. It is highly adaptable to a wide range of soils and is drought tolerant. Does best in full sun.
