The Bloodgood London Planetree (Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’) is a large-sized fast-growing shade tree. It has a pyramidal canopy shape as a young tree but develops into a spreading rounded crown with a strong central leader and a few large limbs branching off the tree. Its foliage is rich green, lobed, and star-shaped almost resembling a maple leaf. They turn a nice yellow in the fall. Its bark is quite showy and captivating with a main silver color and reddish-cream colored patches. Sometimes chunks of bark will peel off on mature trees.
The Bloodgood London Planetree is a cross between an Oriental Planetree (Platanus orientalis) and an American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis). Its original origin is not known but it was discovered early on that the tree could withstand the smoke and pollution of London, making it a popular city tree since. Great for parks and streets as a shade tree when its canopy is allowed to spread out. Also can be a good shade specimen standing on its own in the yard. It prefers full sun and is adaptable to most soils.
