The Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) is a medium- to large-sized ornamental shade tree. It is known for its fantastic autumn display of foliage. Dark green, very glossy, ovate leaves about 6” long turn shades of scarlet, orange, purple, and gold. The color varies so much that the same branch might have all these colors. It typically has a dense, pyramidal form with spreading branches but can vary from tree to tree, sometimes developing a flat-topped crown. The bark furrows with age and resembles an alligator hide in older trees, providing interesting texture in the winter landscape.
The Black Tupelo’s native range is eastern to central North America, from Maine to Ontario and down to Texas and Florida. It is considered one of the best and most consistent fall color trees native to North America. It will establish itself easily as a specimen tree in yards and parks to provide adequate shade with its dense and spreading form and a beautiful sight in the fall with its foliage. It also will blend in well to more natural landscapes. It prefers full to partial sun and is able to grow in a variety of soil types. It is drought tolerant while also being able to grow in some standing water.
