The Bigtooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum), sometimes called the western Sugar Maple, is a small- to medium-sized native tree that grows wildly in valleys, canyons, foothills, slopes, and mountain stream banks in higher elevations. This tree stands strong and upright and has a spreading, rounded crown with furrowed gray bark. In the fall, the 3-5 lobed leaves turn a dashing red-to-yellow. This tree is suitable for an urban setting as it can withstand urban pollution and can tolerate a variety of soil types. It also does well in partial and full sun.
