The Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra) is a medium- to large-sized evergreen tree. It has a dense, conical to pyramidal crown shape when young and matures into a dense, broad canopied tree with a slightly pointed top, oval-shape crown, short trunk, and low spreading branches. It is made up of big dark green needles in clusters of two that are 3-6 inches and tend to curl at the ends. They last on the tree for 4-8 years before falling off and growing back. Its bark is light gray to brown.

The Austrian Pine has a bit of a scattered native range, from Sicily to Greece to Bulgaria, northwest Africa, and Asia minor. It is a tough and hardy tree that is resistant to poor soils and wind. It makes a great border or windscreen for its dense branches and nice-looking color and form. It also is tolerant of pollution, making it an option as a tree for an urban park or street. It may serve as a specimen in a yard or planted on its own or around a few other trees and can be a nice backdrop for flowering trees or fall foliage. Does best in full sun and withstands a lot of soil types.
