The Arnold Columnar Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Arnold’) is a large-sized columnar tree. It is known for its extremely upright, narrow form. It produces the distinctive tulip-shaped flowers that are greenish-yellow with orange and gold at the base. They bloom in mid to late spring and stay on for several weeks. The square leaves are 4-lobed and emerald green. They have a better fall color than the parent species, turning a stunning gold. The bark has significant winter value with its deeply furrowed, gray bark.
The Arnold Columnar Tulip Tree was released by the Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts. This cultivar is landscapes that could use an attractive, but not overwhelmingly, showy tree where there is not a lot of space. Not suited as a street tree due to not tolerating urban pollution well. Great for privacy screens when planted in groups alongside each other and doubles as a striking yellow wall in the fall. Also can be planted in tight gardens or near structures. It needs somewhat regular pruning. It does best in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soils.
