This North America native has upright spreading branching atop its short trunk, creating a general, rounded shape. Thick, odorous sap flows inside the tree. The "smokey", or cloud-like appearance comes from light flower clusters that are usually a shade of reddish-orange or pink that appear in mid- to late summer. Fall leaf color is Reddish-purple.
