The Willow Oak (Quercus phellos) is a large-sized shade tree. It has a pyramidal form as a young tree then matures to a more open, rounded form typical of an oak tree but a little narrower. The tree is hard to distinguish by its leaves since they are not lobed like other oaks. They are spear-shaped and pointed and emerge as a brighter green in the summer before maturing to a darker summertime green and eventually developing bronzy yellow-orange fall color. Dark gray-brown bark that irregularly furrows with age provides nice winter interest. This tree is also a faster grower than most other oaks.
The Willow Oak’s native range is from New York down to Florida and over to Missouri and Texas. Its attractive, well-balanced form makes it a popular tree in the southeastern United States. A great option as a shade tree in large yards, parks, or along streets if there is enough room for its branches to spread. It can also do well in wetter sites like near ponds or streams. Quite adaptable to many growing conditions, such as well-drained, poorly-drained, and clay soils. Prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade.
