The Sunburst® Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos inermis ‘Suncole’) is a medium-sized, fast-growing shade tree. It is another popular Honeylocust cultivar used as a shade tree. Its form is upright, broad, and spreading with an open crown. Its foliage is quite beautiful, emerging in the spring as gold and maturing to lime green for the summer. In the fall, the pinnately compound leaves turn a splendid shade of yellow. This tree is thornless and also a male selection which does not produce seed pods meaning it is a bit lower maintenance due to less litter coming from its canopy.
The Sunburst® Honeylocust was introduced in 1957 and has been a very popular cultivar since its introduction. It is known as a shade tree that casts dappled light below its canopy, just enough to not kill grass beneath its canopy. It also has quite a fine and delicate appearance which combined with its pretty foliage makes it a great accent tree. This tree is very low-maintenance. It is fast-growing, very hardy, adaptable to many growing conditions, and takes pruning very well. It does best in full sun and does not have a preference to soil type.
