The Snowcone® Japanese Snowbell (Styrax japonicus ‘JFS-D’) is a small- to medium-sized flowering ornamental tree. It has a dense, symmetrical, pyramidal form with branches extending horizontally from the main trunk in an elegant manner. In late spring to early summer, white flowers with yellow centers emerge fragrant and droop from the branch in pendulous racemes. The foliage contrasts nicely with the flowers due to its upright posture and handsome green foliage. In the fall, the leaves turn warm shades of yellow.
The Snowcone® Japanese Snowbell is a J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. introduction. This cultivar was selected for its resistance to twig dieback, which is common in the parent species, and more pyramidal form. It makes for a beautiful showy tree in the garden and follows the flowering perennials nicely with a later bloom as well as providing shade to the more heat sensitive plants. Its fall color also makes it a pleasant sight in the later growing season. This tree does best in full to partial sun and prefers well-drained soils. Water regularly until established and during the summer months in hotter climates.
