The Rocky Mountain Glow® Bigtooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum ‘Schmidt’) is a small- to medium-sized slow-growing tree. It is directly related to arguably the most well-known eastern maple, the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). This cultivar of the Bigtooth Maple was created by J. Frank Schmidt Nurseries when they grafted a Bigtooth Maple onto the root stock of a Sugar Maple. \n \nThe Rocky Mountain Glow® Bigtooth Maple is a smaller tree and more compact than the Sugar Maple, with leaves that are very similar in shape but are smaller than the parent species. Throughout the spring and summer the leaves are a polished emerald green until they turn to a bright orange-to-red color in the fall. This tree can tolerate drought and most soil types but is not as tolerant to alkaline soils as the Bigtooth Maple. It does best in full sun and but can also do well in partial sun.
