The Red Alder (Alnus rubra) is a medium- to large-sized, fast-growing tree that is native from southeast Alaska down to southern California. It has a narrow, rounded canopy (can grow wider when out in the open) with a straight trunk that consists of thin gray bark that becomes whiter with age and usually has patches of lichen. Long catkins appear in the spring before the wavy, serrated leaves emerge. In the fall it produces small brown cones that stay on the tree throughout the winter.

\nThe Red Alder is most commonly found in the wild in moist woods or along stream banks. It is very important in restoration because it is a host to nitrogen fixing bacteria (its leaf litter also contains nitrogen that is good for soil) and can greatly improve a disturbed site when introduced into it. This tree can be used to control erosion near rivers and streams or on steep slopes. A very low-maintenance tree, it grows well in partial or full sun and can thrive in most soil types (including flooding conditions).
