The Hot Wings® Tatarian Maple (Acer tataricum ‘GarAnn’) is a small-sized highly unique ornamental tree. The tree has an upright, spreading growth habit and is almost as wide as it is tall, the mature ones typically having an equal height and width. However, what really makes this tree standout is its ornamental fruit. In mid to late summer, cherry red samaras emerge and contrast the dark green summer foliage, giving off an almost christmas-like appearance. These samaras stay on until fall when the leaves then steal the show with an orange, red, yellow display.
The Hot Wings® Tatarian Maple was selected as a seedling of Tatarian maple in Fort Collins, Colorado by Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery in 1993. It stands out both for its beauty and low-maintenance attributes. Its strong and uniform branching habits make it both more tolerable of storms than other Tatarian Maples and easy to take care of. It does great as an accent tree in a small yard, or can accompany other trees. Either way, you can be sure it will stand out in July and August. It does best in partial to full sun and does not have a particular preference to soil but prefers drier conditions to moist ones.
