The English Oak (Quercus robur) is a medium- to large-sized shade tree. It has a marvelous form sporting a rounded crown with spreading upright branches and a very thick, short trunk. The canopy is made up of 3-7 rounded lobed leaves that are richly blue-green to dark green in the spring and summer, eventually turning dull red-brown in the fall. The tree produces small acorns with cups that cover one-third of the nut. Its dark gray, ridged and furrowed bark combined with a beautiful wide, upright form make it quite the site in the bleak winter months.

The English Oak is native to Europe, north Africa, and western Asia. It was brought to North America in the seventeenth century and has played a significant role in the lumber industry, specifically for furniture and ship building. It does great as a specimen tree standing on its own in the yard and will be sure to draw attention for its captivating, large, and elegant appearance. Also provides great shade and is suitable for large parks. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions but may struggle with disease in more humid climates. Does best in full sun.
